Chemistry is the study of the composition of matter and the changes it undergoes. This course covers (but is not limited to) the following: the periodic table and it’s trends, the metric system, scientific notation, atomic theory, history of the atom, subatomic particles, naming compounds, chemical reactions, balancing equations, phase changes, gas laws, stoichiometry, electron configuration, bonding and molecular shape, solutions, acids and bases, thermochemistry, nuclear chemistry, and oxidation/reduction.
Grading
Grading is based on a point system where each item has a possible point value. The reported grade equals the points earned divided by the possible points times one hundred. Points from tests, labs, quizzes, class work and homework will be used to determine the grade for the course. Grades will be posted on Power School; no formal written reports will be sent home. The course grade will be based on the grades for each quarter (40% for each quarter) and the final exam grade (20%).
Be respectfully of yourself and others.
Be on time for class.
Cell phones and other electronic devices can be valuable tools. Using them for non-academic purposes is prohibited.
Follow safety procedures. Goggles must be worn for all lab activities.
Follow ALL directions, both written and verbal, for all lab activities.
Clean your work space.
Cheating results in a reduced grade and will be reported to parents and administration.
Class Materials
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi.A three-ring binder (useful
for taking notes and keeping handouts together), paper, a pencil, and a calculator
should be brought to class. A textbook
will be assigned at the beginning of the semester, and may be kept at
home. A classroom set of textbooks will
be available daily.
Homework
Homework will be posted on the classroom board every day. Homework should be completed on a daily basis; the purpose of homework assignments is to reinforce and practice the information that is taught in the classroom. If you fall significantly behind the pace of the class in chemistry, it can be hard to catch up, but catching up is the only way to continue.
Safety
A safety contract will be provided to you on the first day of class. Sign and date the contract. Also, have your parents/guardians read and sign the contract. Remember, ALL students MUST wear goggles and follow ALL directions during lab activities.
Missed Work
Work missed due to an excused absence must be made up in accordance with the Wake County Policy. All tests must be made up within a week of a normal absence. I am available after school on most Thursdays to assist with make-up work and to provide extra help. I am also available at other times by appointment.
